Reddit Student Loans

Can a college or a university ask a student to take a year off or a semester if the loans and federal aid was filed late and will be disbursed late but has been approved? Initially the bursars office said once the loan has been approved they will lift the hold.

I have an outstanding balance for spring term. My father who I am estranged from did not tell me it has not been paid and he was not able to get a loan. I made a loan And it was sent to my college August 2 for certification but was only certified yesterday(!) and my dad applied and completed only the federal aid and grants this morning.

The financial aid officer is saying to me that there’s a reluctance in lifting the hold on my registration bec “this situation might come up again for this school year.”

My father lost his job and my parents got into a very messy divorce with domestic violence and my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I became homeless and all this happened in Nov 2018. The school is aware of this. And yet now they are saying there’s a reluctance to lift the hold on my registration.

Classes are suppose to begin on August 26.

Is that legal and can they do that? What are my options. I need help and advice urgently.
