Can you sell and buy stocks in the same day and avoid pattern day trading?

If you buy a stock and sell it on the same day, you risk becoming labelled a pattern day trader if you do this often.
However, if you do the opposite of this, selling stock as it drops and buying it back when it hits the local minimum, does it have the same effect?

Would this also count against you for the pattern day trading warning?
