Divorced Parents and Parent Plus Loan denial

Hi all,

My parents divorced last year, and were separated for the previous four. I live with my mom. My mom has been denied for a parent plus loan. In order for me to qualify for the increased sub/unsub loans, would my dad need to be denied as well?

  • No, if one parent is denied for having adverse credit history, then that’s sufficient to raise your personal borrowing limit up to the same as for Independent students. (Though, if you want Parent PLUS loans instead, which might be the case if the Independent limits are still too low for your need, then you can try again with your other parent.)
