Reddit Student Loans

My graduate student loans are in default, and it is placing my son (recently graduated) at a disadvantage for college assistance.

Any help is appreciated. My son just graduated, in the top 5% of his class at a progressive private high school. We missed some deadlines for scholarships so, for at least the first year of undergrad, will need to rely on loans to offset the gap between his academic scholarships and all-inclusive expenses for a state university.

We are in a weird position where my late father’s estate paid for his schooling, and nothing else. We live paycheck to paycheck, literally, but have been overconfident that his excellent education would lead to amazing college opportunities. This has not panned out, and I am heartbroken for my son.

I am currently in default on my own student loans, so we do not qualify for Parent Plus loans to help. What options do we have?

Please be kind. I want the best for my son, as he has incredible (!) potential. Thank you, in advance.
